Kevin asked:
: One of the problems, beyond the obvious, is how to develop a password
: system to make sure only paying subscribers are allowed into the areas
: we designate for "subscriber-only" access. I am aware of a few sites...
<snip>
: My question is, are there software packages out there that can be
: licensed or purchased outright that would allow us to enroll
: subscribers at the front door of our site and keep track of them
: afterwards, letting only active subs access the really good content?
: I know they exist, but how can we get our hands on one?

Check out a software package called PWS from a company called w3.com
(www.w3.com). It is a shrinkwrap product with manuals, etc., and has some
apparently awesome functionality for setting up user registration and tracking
systems. For example, when I called them recently their rep was able to pull up
my bio I'd registered at the site and see all the times I'd entered the site
and what pages I'd loaded.

A good example of a site that has some "free" content but requires an entrance
fee for some information is AutoSite, which uses the PWS software
(www.autosite.com).
