With the relative ease of switching domain name service, this kind of thing
is gonna be pretty common. (In other words, it is a relatively simple,
though technical, proposition to change the address www.companyname.com from
MY web server to YOUR web server, so that the switcharoo is pretty
transparent to surfers.)
We are finding that to be a successful web site host, we must compete on
price, quality of service, quality of customer support, quantity and type of
cgi-bin tools and size of pipeline (i.e. lack of bottleneck for people
getting to your pages). I think the wheat will separate from the chaff and
customers will come to recognize that they can't just make these decision
based on price. The bottom line is that NOT all Web sites are created
equal. If someone wants to pull a site and go to one of those that offers
unlimited hits for $50 a year, they will. I also firmly believe that a
quality web site host will get the business back when the cheap site is
jammed, when no one can get into it, when the server is down repeatedly and
when development of that site stagnates.
