>Have you come across or developed any rules of netiquette for the web,
>either for a site that you have designed, or for sites that you
>maintain? Would issues of "appropriate" content be considered
>netiquette issues? Why? What about linking to other sites - should
>they be notified or asked? What about the resultant bandwidth/cpu
>load from a popular site on a shared server -- would it be good
>netiquette to move it to a separate server?
My "Free Launch" site is a routinely updated selection of what I consider
"bookmark quality" links, chosen for richness in content, ease of
navigation, and enduring informational value. I have made it a policy to
notify sites I have chosen to link to, and have found folks to be very
pleased (and in some cases surprised!) that I bothered to notify them.
I have also been approached to consider sites to be added, some of which
were sensational in nature or blatantly promotional of the owner's product
or service. Those I have politely refused, since I considered them
"inappropriate" for the intent of the page.
So from that standpoint, I think "Netiquette" is beginning to appear on the Web.
I have been publishing an online newletter for a Delphi SIG called
Callahan's Saloon, and one of the monthly features is called "Tips on
Netiquette". Although it focuses more on live conferencing etiquette, it
may be useful to your research. The newsletter is called "Callahan's Bar
Rag", and the url is:
