My main decision has been to name my web site <herefordshire.com>. I live
in Herefordshire (UK) and I have a company.
Two things I have read but seen very few people take up; 1) to Joe Public
the name must be simple. Where was that site - oh yes,
hhht;\\ohxc~j_/etc.etc. or something?? Joe Public thinks locally and he's
the customer. Joe Public is more likely to remember where you're from than
your usually unmemorable company name (unless you're a big company, or well
branded).
Unfortuneatly the UK naming board wouldn't pass <herefordshire.co.uk> so it
had to be .com!
2) The web is a mess, as we all know, and so, even with yahoo and the like
sensible grouping has to be a way forward. Definitive sites on magic, or
marketing, or whatever, are one way but with the major problem of bandwidth
a local developing page is better than a distant site or your own hotlist.
Local? I don't know if it's better for the US but I am fed up with sitting
for five minutes in the middle of pages, or jumps whilst connections are
made and remade. Joe Public just isn't going to sit there.
Hence: is it OK to download someones page, ones that are so superb you just
have to show them others, and put them on your own server for instant
access - changing the links, of course to get out again? A bit like
mirroring?
