I have a rather large web site for my (small) design firm - we provide
Internet-related services (we create what I believe are high-quality web
sites, interactive multimedia presentations and print). Recently, I
snail-mailed postcards that included the URL of our site in a prominent
place. The primary reason for sending it out was to let my clients and
prospects know that via our web site, they have access to a lot more
information than I could ever afford to include in an ad or brochure
(even though I could design my own and get a good price on printing) -
things like production and pricing guidelines, new media marketing info -
including a matching, downloadable multimedia presentation on "Creating a
Presence on the World Wide Web", our on-line portfolio, our company
profile, our capabilities, etc. Of course, I also included my phone
number for those who aren't wired yet. In less than one week, we have
increased traffic and received email from the president of a
medium-sized, national software company requesting a meeting. We also had
a visitor from Compaq (compaq.com) on our web log as a result of this
mailing - I've been trying for years to get someone over there to take a
look at our work!

I think print (or almost any other off-line medium) will prove to be a
very effective way to promote a web site. By using direct mail, I was
able to target local and regional prospects. Afterall, what are the
chances that someone in Houston will actually discover my site without
intentionally looking for it? (the old "needle in a haystack" problem)
And, if they don't have access to the WWW, at least they know we're alive.

BTW: If anyone wants one of these postcards, just send your mailing
address to tommy@oddo.com. If I have enough left, we'll send you one.

Tommy
