>>The only thing that surprises me is that marketers are still so hopelessly
>>sexist as to even imagine online women MIGHT rank shopping as important.
>>
>>Get with the program: the only thing I want to buy online is access to
>>research services. Trying to look at a catalog with graphics is a waste of
>>my time and online connection fees, especially when I have a mailbox full of
>>free, colorful, easy to read catalogs on paper.

My response:
i am not sure what you are responding to here--please refresh me on the issue
I believe that shopping online might be important to women and men but it
is not the ONLY important thing for either men or women. Frankly I'd
rather be able to order directly via email than go to the store or be
inundated with catalogues i do not want.
And incidentally-i HATE to shop--I think the internet is perfect for those
of us who do hate to shop as long as the merchandisers and retailers make
it easy and time efficient to order online.
I think it's ignorant for women to keeping bashing shopping as unimportant.
What we are really tring to say, i think, is women do not want to be
pigeonholed into just shoppers or even shoppers. That would be like pigeon
holing men into Sports aned couch potatoes. The point is women and men
also want computer resources, educational resources, marketing resources
and more. The point is we all have to shop whether we like it or not.. And
as i mentioned some place else before --if you dont have to shop then get
your maid (who is probably female ) on the net and let her shop.
Marketers are merely trying to find out how to reach women online so their
ventures online will be porfitable, because yes, they do think women do
most of the shopping and make most of the buying decisions. And yes, like
it or not, they are right. Marketers need to be shown how to appeal to
women, particularly those who do not like to shop. That's where the Net
will be successful. Women or people who like to shop will still go to the
stores. It's those of us who have other priorities who will need a fast,
easy and efficient way to shop online so we will have the time to do the
things that really matter to us.
Shopping is like eating, it cannot be avoided.
