Domain Names

I have been reading with great interest the discussion on domain names.
The majority of opinion appears to favour having your own domain and an
intuative URL. Our company has gone the route of using a providers
domain, but I feel that a move away from that set up is desirable. How
would we as a company go about this in the UK? I realise this will have
been discussed elsewhere so any pointers will be gratefully recieved.
Thanks
