Back in the middle of February, the newsgroup
comp.infosystems.www.announce, on the initiative of its volunteer
moderator, Michele Grant, began a policy of refusing commercial web site
announcements.

>>2.b. Can I publicize my commercially-oriented site (NEW! 16 Feb 96)?
>
>NO! As of 16 February 1996, this newsgroup allows no commercial posts.
>Shareware announcements are allowed as long as the software costs less
>than $30 U.S. and is specifically web-related. Why? The moderator is a
>volunteer and does not wish to spend that volunteer time doing
>marketing work for commercial entities.

Does anyone truly miss this newsgroup as a place to put their
announcements? Obviously, site publicity is far more complex now than back
in the days when the W3Catalog and NCSA What's New were the be-all and
end-all, but c.i.w.a always seemed like a useful place. It drew readership
based on a familiar Web content model -- the quirky and interesting stuff
would pull people in, after which they might then happen across your
announcement. I fear that any new newsgroup on the order of
"comp.infosystems.www.announce.commercial" would become a mere dumping
ground, read only by the people posting to it; I suggest no such thing.
Still, c.i.w.a, like the neighborhood where one grew up, is a piece of the
past now changed, unfamiliar yet still resonant.

Reflectively, Jonathan
