There is about a 2-1 ratio on calling minutes in and out of the US. This
means that we (the US) place twice as many minutes of calls overseas than
we get coming in.
Countries such as Japan and the UK have something more like a 1:1 ratio
because of lower rates in those countries and more phones per capita.
The real promise of email and the net is give the other countries access
to the kind of communication that fuels US commerce. The US originated
internet can help other countries to do business and communicate better
and can also sidestep barriers to access to those countries.
I can take an order from Japan (and have done so already) without setting
up shop there or anything else. I put it one the web and let people know
with email, PR, ads, etc. and then sell online with a credit card and
finally ship with mail or electronically.
Suddenly all those silly and restrictive barriers are gone. As long as
you are affluent enough to have a computer, credit card and internet
access!
