You can open an account with any number of callback companies who will not
only give you access to 1-800 numbers but also give you access to
international dialling at discounts up to 50%. Besides, AT&T now has a new
service that allows free 1-800 access from any country in the world. Of
course that's only for companies who subcribe and are willing to pay for
the high connect fees.

I agree with you about e-mail being the most important application. Whilst
on this point I would like to ad that sites that are heavily graphically
oriented are a big pain if packets headed for Europe get stuck or lost on
some router in New York and we end up waiting 5 minutes or forever to load
a page containing very little real information.
