The Dreaded Mailshot

Hi there fellow marketeers,

A quick question for the group. Does anyone have any recommendations
from personal experience for PC Windows-based software available in
the UK to carry out large volume email mailshot activities, squirting
the little devils out over a 64k leased line?

Before anybody gets too worried, I'm not carrying Macmillan's
electronic publishing operation into the inferno-hot realms of the
dreaded junkmail flame, but our magazines on the WWW are collecting a
lot of emails where visitors are signing up requesting electronic
notifications for various things.

Ideally the package would have some database functionality for
separate lists, record keeping etc, + be able to support mass email
runs of between 3,000/20,000 per shot, with a maximum capacity of
holding 150,000ish names on record.

The program wouldn't need to actually harvest emails from our web
pages, as that's done for us by our IT chaps and chapesses on the
ICL-Fujitsu corporate service provider side of things, and the
software wouldn't need to be Listserv-capable (although if it was, and
this functionality wasn't at the detriment of mailing list management,
Listserv features might be a bonus). We'd run it overnight, so this
theoretical application would need to be fairly stable and bug-free.

Also, any idea of how long an email mailing of, say, 3000+ addresses
takes to squirt out? Technical problems to be avoided? Tips for
administration structures? Resource implications of said admin on
staff etc?

Look forward to hearing your war stories on this one.
