I think the idea has merit. It is not unlike brides registering their
preferred product lines at certain stores. Nor is it much different than
target marketing by association. If you respond to one charity drive, you
get junk drive from dozens more.
Mail list houses are full of names and addresses of people in hundreds of
categories that you can select from to target your mailing. This
information is acquired indirectly from you when you respond to a
particular marketing effort, or even make a purchase.
Considering that today many people do not want to receive further mail
simply because they asked you for something, the consumer might be ready
for just such an idea. Many wise people feel that it is better to get
information direct from an individual than indirectly from second
sources. I still received mail in my wife's name, who passed away almost
three years ago, as well as in the name of several companies that I no
longer operate. With the "speed" of e-mail, it seems I should be able to
fill out a form indicating which types of material I do/do not want to
receive and send it to a central mailbot for further use or distribution.
If my needs/desires change, I just send them an update.
