In the Fall, 1992, issue of SMALL PRESS, lawyers for The New York Times and
The Los Angeles Times claim that reviews are copyrighted and may not be
excerpted for use in advertisements (including book jackets) without
permission. Further, The New York Times charges fees for using blurbs from
their reviews.

The SMALL PRESS article, written by attorney Robert Hard, deftly delves
into the whole "fair use" issue, concluding that, in the case of using
blurbs, the application of the law is "murky."
