Given that part of a company's net presence could begin as soon as
tomorrow (domain, email, mailing lists, etc., even files on ftp sites if
the company is, for example, a shareware manufacturer), I would say this
is not great advice.

As a PR/marketing person, I can suggest that for an existing company,
putting the machinery in gear to publicize and market a new presence on
the net shouldn't require more than a few weeks to a couple of months,
and other than the big splash you may want to make when your clients' web
pages open for business, it says nowhere that one need wait for the
publicity before setting up the rest of the company's presence.

It shouldn't take anywhere near that time to put up a web site either,
for any but the largest presentations, from conceptualization to marketing.

Far better, I would speculate, to advise your clients that you will be
on the alert for whatever will be coming down the pipes over the next few
months, since the net *is*, of course, evolving that quickly. I'd want
my clients to be on the net as close to right now as possible. It's easy
to grow with any new developments. It's a lot harder to succeed if you're
the last in your industry to get on board.
