Viele GrueBe! I believe there is one color in a .gif that is designated
as the background color. Several utilities can set this to "transparent."

The idea is to break up the blocky shape of most Web pages.

In reference to Mary's post:

I don't see your objection to allowing the server/author greater control
over the presentation of a page (such as color). In no other media is the
author as limited as on the Web.

I am also one of the color impaired people <g> of which you spoke, and I
would have no trouble if color were employed as a navigational aid.
